Our new designs didn't need to go through anyone else besides brand and marketing — no engineers needed. The freedom and flexibility we gained through Webflow was invaluable.Elyssa AlbertVP of Design, AttentiveFOR TESTING PURPOSESHow Attentive upleveled their site (and brand) with WebflowAs text message marketing platform Attentive became more well-known — and innovative brands like Urban Outfitters, CB2, and Rebecca Minkoff were running successful programs through their platform — the design and marketing teams knew it was time to elevate their brand. And what started as a small refresh in WordPress due to platform constraints became a complete brand and website overhaul with Webflow.Going into the rebrand, their website lived in WordPress. That meant any changes they wanted to make would need to go through their external agency, dramatically limiting their autonomy and speed. Plus, their design department couldn’t really be a part of the process.Using Webflow as a catalyst to dream biggerAs designers, we're very critical of software. And when I use Webflow, I think, ‘that’s how I’d design it.’ There's nothing to critique about it. It does what it says it's going to do.Elyssa Albert, VP of Design, AttentiveInitially, the Attentive team wasn’t planning on doing anything to the website except changing type and colors “because of the massive effort it took to work with an agency, and it took a ton of engineers to code everything,” Elyssa said. "Outside of accessibility improvements, any design changes we wanted to make weren't even worth the time and effort.”Everything changed when Attentive’s SVP of Marketing presented Webflow to her as an alternative to WordPress.Following the initial introduction to Webflow, Elyssa spent a weekend trying it out. “I don’t have any coding experience and it came to me naturally because of how intuitive it is,” she said. It only took two days to rebuild their blog in Webflow, showing her team the power and flexibility switching could bring them. From there, they started to dream even bigger for their rebrand.With any website migration, questions and concerns are expected. But with the Attentive team, Elyssa said, there weren’t any. “Our fairly lightweight V1 site took months and months to build. So when I showed what I could do in just one weekend with Webflow, that’s all I needed to do to get the whole team on board.” And any questions or technical challenges were solved easily with the help of Webflow’s Customer Success team.Breaking through the limits of their old siteOnce they dug into the larger rebrand, the design and marketing teams managed the rebuild independently, without engineering. Because of this, they could keep it under wraps internally, effectively empowering their teams to do their best work autonomously.‍Webflow allowed us to design and build new pages so quickly that, when we decided to add a number of new pages close to our deadline, we were able to easily finalize them in time for launch.‍Emily TarBush, Strategic Design Manager, AttentiveThroughout the entire design and build process, there was a continual collaboration between the design and marketing teams. They used symbols to build out three different “mega navs” that dynamically change across tablet and mobile. And additionally, the ability to build complex animations in Webflow was a game-changer for the team. "I would play around with CSS to build animations and it took hours and hours just to figure it out. In Webflow, it was all already done through the forums, the YouTube channel, and templates," Elyssa said.Texts We LoveThe Texts We Love page, featured above, was built as its own site and was slated to launch before the larger brand reveal. When the team decided to include it in the larger site launch, it was transferred into the attentivemobile.com project — made easy by the fact you can copy and paste between projects.“The design work for Texts We Love was heavily informed by the functionality of Jetboost — a  third-party app — to build out the advanced filtering that’s integral to the content,” said Lauren Kolm, a Brand Design Manager at Attentive. “Webflow’s CMS collections made it easy to organize the large number of phone screens we wanted to highlight. Once we knew how to leverage these features, it was just a matter of applying our brand identity kit to the visual elements on the page.”Accessibility in WebflowAccessibility and compliance were a huge driving force behind our rebrand. We advocate heavily for ADA and TCPA compliance with our clients, so it’s of great importance for us to set a high standard for ourselves.‍Elyssa Albert, VP of Design, AttentiveAccessibility improvements to the Attentive site in Webflow included making sure all copy on the site had acceptable levels of color contrast, made especially easy with the color contrast checker. Their content marketing team also took advantage of the ability to add alt text to all of their images, made seamless by Webflow’s asset panel and CMS Editor. Finally, they boosted accessibility even further with the ability to add custom attributes to elements such as aria-labels, roles, and titles.Webflow for growthNow that they’re using Webflow, the design and greater marketing team can make changes quickly, efficiently, and completely autonomously. The global team of 2,000 people launched Amazon’s first ever global 360 campaign, helped artists grow their audience on Spotify, and designed a way for H&M customers to combine browsing with buying.  But when Josh joined in 2021 he saw that the agency’s internal tool strategy was all over the map. The agency’s official stance was to be “tool-agnostic,” which gave producers autonomy to run their own projects. This approach led to highly manual workflows that made reporting to leadership and clients less efficient. “The process was clunky, manual and inefficient,” Josh says. “The team wasn’t able to track individual contracts and estimates efficiently. It took a lot of human effort to gather and centralize the data.” Producers all had their own idiosyncratic systems for getting work done. Contracts were sent for internal legal review that often lacked necessary context. This meant the legal team had to ask the same questions over and over to ensure all contracts provided adequate details and protections. With Airtable forms they were able to standardize the intake process, increase clarity and reduce unnecessary back and forth. The same can be said for reviewing budget estimates as well. Within their Airtable ecosystem the team created automated daily reporting of contract statuses, consistency with cost estimates, a centralized repository for all contacts, and a dashboard for individual reviews and approvals of contracts. Josh’s leadership team trusted him to build a system that would enable the production department to work with a single source of truth for projects, contracts, and budget estimates. So he audited the agency and scoured for the best tool to align 18 departments across the organization. That’s how he discovered that the Product Strategy department at Code and Theory had been using Airtable for years, using it to build out current requirements documents for product builds. The current requirements document is a flexible design system. It’s a living document meant to change with each individual client's needs. The information about each project blueprint is collected in Airtable and informs a future product roadmap. Josh decided to pilot a similar system with one of their most complex accounts: a leading financial services institution, which at the time had eight different digital projects rolled into it, with eight different lead producers. Inside Code and Theory's office at One World Trade CenterJosh went to the producers and helped them build a production handbook app in Airtable. The handbook gives an overview of individual project work, including individual team members, key client stakeholders, timelines, deliverables, and key documents. Each producer has their own individual project management base in Airtable that connects to the production handbook for continuity. Using Sync, data is then connected to a single Airtable base that tracks the health of each project, sales pipeline, internal and external invoices, and a master schedule for all work. Individual producers can use personalized views to ensure they’re only seeing information that pertains to them. Airtable forms create a direct feedback loop for clients throughout the process. “Airtable reduced a lot of unnecessary confusion and inefficient communication.” Josh CurrieDirector of ProductionThe lead producers saw the system’s value immediately. With Airtable’s specialized views and permissions producers are able to cut down a significant amount of inefficient, duplicative and manual work. Josh says the 60 person production department “started loving Airtable.”“In the production department alone we saved more than 5,000 hours in one year.” Josh CurrieDirector of ProductionAdoption across the agency took off from there. “Next thing you know other team members outside the discipline started asking for it. It was an incredible organic roll out,” Josh said. He estimates roughly 500 people across 18 departments using Airtable Code and Theory saves at least 10,000 hours annually. The success of the production team led to more connected apps for Code and Theory. Josh helped the legal team build a contract tracker app to create a consistent process for legal and business reviews of Letters of Engagement, Change Orders and Scope of Work contracts with clients. Previously the legal team used to edit a daily email manually updating the status of contracts in order to send an internal update to leadership. Now teams use Automations to share timely updates about the status of each contract. Automated reminders through Slack and email begin to alert team members five business days before a Letter of Engagement expires so they’re never working unprotected. “Airtable helps us mitigate risk,” Josh said. They built a similar app for new project estimates, which meant greater visibility from all discipline leads and therefore more accurate estimates. Josh says Airtable has helped new producers get up to speed with projects faster, and it has cut out many categories of unnecessary status checks and questions. Since implementing this system Josh has been promoted to Director of Production at Code and Theory. He meets with agency CEO Michael Treff to walk through dashboards showing how quickly contracts are being approved or where they stand on topics like risk mitigation. “Having been through many cycles of software adoption at Code and Theory, I can confirm the enthusiasm to which Airtable was received and embraced by both client teams and internal operations teams was staggering,” says Treff. “It's become a critical tool to how we work for our clients and ourselves.”Josh calls Airtable, “the best producer possible.” The apps he built mirror what his team of producers do every day. One major player, Copa Airlines, embarked on a digital transformation journey to deliver outstanding self service experiences empowering customers with the right tools to have an effortless traveling experience.
This approach enables customers to book flights, find information and prepare for travel. To turn this vision into reality, they teamed up with trusted partners like Directus.Making Modernization a Priority
Established in 1947 and headquartered in Panama City, Copa operates as the flagship carrier of Panama, connecting the most important cities in North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
The airline is a member of Star Alliance, and as such, offers an extensive network of routes and codeshare agreements with other member airlines. Currently, Copa offers over 330 daily scheduled flights to nearly 81 destinations in 32 countries from its Panama City hub.
In 2022, Copa selected Directus as its content management platform for its website, Copa.com. A key objective was to broaden the scope of content management capabilities to include other customer touchpoints.
“We needed a technology that would enable us to scale and distribute content across our different channels,” said Mariana Yepez, Manager of Digital Products. “We also needed to simplify the process of making content changes and updates.”
Copa’s digital team worked with a multidisciplinary committee to evaluate several headless CMS solutions, starting with research and then performing multiple proofs of concept with different products, including Directus, which proved to be the most modern and flexible alternative.
“We had high expectations, and knew Directus would be a strong and responsive partner. Since the beginning of the project they showed high commitment in continuously improving their product,” said Anibal Diaz, who is responsible for creating data modeling and handling all the content used on the company’s content management system for display through various digital platforms.
“During the proof of concept, we really liked the ability that Directus provided, allowing us to create data structures from scratch, and that it's an open source solution with a growing support community," said Diaz.
"Directus was able to work with us and adapt to what we needed from day one."Fast and Easy Updates, Translations
Today, a team of four works on updating content for Copa.com on a daily basis, and they collaborate with other teams and vendors who develop content to then integrate into Directus.
“Directus made it easy to involve non-technical staff in updating content, as it is very user friendly,”  Maria Lucia Peraza, Sr. Manager of Digital Solutions said, as she explained how Copa was able to easily expand their content migration team during the transition to their new website.
Another important feature of Directus for Copa is its multilingual support, as they manage content in four languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese and French.
Directus provides built-in support for multilingual content and data, with the ability to create and manage translations for any field or value.
“Translating content in Directus is really simple, and you can also easily segment your audience to receive tailored content,” Yepez said.
Copa is also leveraging Directus's flexible REST API and its data structures, which streamline the process of connecting a variety of digital products to the backend CMS, and differentiated Directus from other solutions that Copa evaluated.Copa's Website Load Speed Increases by 5x
According to Peraza, Directus was a key enabler for improving the performance of their website.
“Because we were able to plug Directus into our website, along with other technical design practices we reduced load times from an average of 6 seconds to just 1-2 seconds,” she said.
“Accelerating load speeds was a key goal for us because we are very focused on growing our web sales and servicing.”
Content updates are now significantly faster. Prior to using Directus, what could often take weeks to accomplish can now be completed in a matter of just a few hours or days, depending on the complexity of the change.
Prior to implementing Directus, the team had to use several tools for uploads and content changes.
“Now we can do it all in one place, and it gets distributed to all of our digital channels, enabling us to deliver critical information to our customers with a fast and reliable method,” Yepez explained.“We Use Directus All Day, Every Day”
Copa’s team will be using Directus as much as possible for various use cases across the organization.
“Over the last few months, we've been focused on stabilizing our new website, but we've definitely considered other Directus functionalities that we can bring onto other users in the company,” Yepez said, adding that Copa is planning to use Directus for marketing content, as well as managing in-flight entertainment and meals information.
Directus could also be used internally to personalize and improve agent experience for Copa call center service agents, by providing tools to facilitate how they answer frequently asked questions, for example.

A growing creative digital agency founded in 2020, Divine Persuasion Studio is helping churches differentiate themselves with beautifully designed marketing, branding and digital content.
The idea for the agency was based on a need the founders noticed was common among churches and faith-based nonprofits: access to creative talent.
“Churches find it challenging to enlist volunteers with creative talent to develop branding and marketing materials or content for services and events, and oftentimes, a single staff member can’t handle all of the creative needs for the organization,” said Esmae Villa, COO & co-founder.
“We launched Divine Persuasion with the goal of providing creative services on a subscription basis for these organizations, including design, branding, video, social media management, and more."

Disgruntled with Drupal
Divine Persuasion’s proprietary platform aims to simplify and improve communication and project management for artists and various contractors working on their clients’ projects.
“We started by using Monday as our project management tool and paired it with various tools, including Drupal, but the process was complicated and clunky for clients,” Esmae said.
"Communication took place separately through email and text, and we knew that paying Drupal’s hosting fees would not be beneficial for us long-term.”
That’s when Michael, a software developer at Divine Persuasion, discovered Directus, the composable backend platform for powering any project.
“I found Directus just in time, after many months of struggling with Drupal, Michael said. “I came across the platform in an article that was comparing it with Strapi.”
While the team was reluctant to scrap their initial setup in Drupal, Michael was convinced Directus was the better way to go.
“Michael told our CEO, ‘Give me three days and I’ll show you what it can do,’” Esmae said.
“He was able to build in three days with Directus what took three months to build in Drupal.”
Esmae added that Directus provides the right combination of customization and ease of use – something missing in other platforms.
“Those platforms that were easy to use didn’t provide the power and customization we needed, and vice versa,” Esmae said. “Directus offers the best of both worlds.”
One hub, many potential spokes
With Directus fueling the application, everything is consolidated and easily accessible. Clients can request projects and view status and progress, and the creative professionals use it to view and manage their work.
“Everything is automated to keep the process moving,” Esmae said.
According to Esmae, the ultimate goal is to build out a fully customized CRM and continue to expand it to house all of their in-house processes, with Directus as a hub, tying multiple platforms together.
“The integration capabilities Directus offers are stronger and easier than we’ve found in other platforms, like Hubspot or Salesforce,” Esmae said.
Consolidated workflow enables 20-30% time savings
Using Directus has helped Divine Persuasion to eliminate information silos by enabling staff and contractors to communicate and collaborate more efficiently and effectively.
“Before we started using Directus, our operations team was doing a lot of manual work, which was very time-consuming and error-prone,” she said.
“With Directus, we can view and update project information automatically, which saves my team hours per day while eliminating errors.”
Additionally, Directus empowers content creators with unified dashboards and a more holistic view of work in progress.
“Our artists can customize their dashboards however they want and work in a way that suits them best,” she said.
“That’s a huge time saver for teams – to the tune of 20-30% of their daily work.”
Leveraging automation to handle manual tasks
One key feature Michael and his team use often is Directus Automate, which supports custom, event-driven data processing and task automation.“We have hundreds of flows configured in the platform to automate different processes,” Michael said.
“It’s simple enough for non-technical users, and it’s extremely flexible, too.”
Building the future and amazing client work with Directus
In the near future, that flexibility will enable Divine Persuasion to lead the charge of modernizing and digitizing the way churches plan their services by building a project management platform and making it available to clients on a subscription basis.“Directus is constantly innovating, and that aligns perfectly with our philosophy,” Esmae said.

Over the last four years, Dropbox Sign has grown from a startup to a lever for growth and a significant part of the larger Dropbox vision. Webflow has enabled us to move fast, iterate, and scale so that we can meet our aggressive business goals and stay agile when our needs evolve.Michelle KeeneSenior Director of Marketing, Dropbox SignFOR TESTING PURPOSESOnce a rather arduous process that required everyone to be physically in the same room with a working pen, signing a document is now as easy as logging into your computer. This is in large part thanks to companies like HelloSign. A global leader in the eSignature field since it came onto the scene in 2011, HelloSign gives millions of customers the tools to securely automate and manage their most important business transactions. Acquired by cloud computing giant Dropbox in 2019, HelloSign was reintroduced in 2022 as Dropbox Sign. Enabling small businesses to scale effectively by making the eSignature process seamless, Dropbox Sign frees up employees from manual tasks so they can focus on more important work like selling, managing relationships, and hiring. Behind the scenes, Dropbox Sign’s own internal efficiency was hindered by traditional web development processes that caused misalignment between design, marketing, and engineering. Updating site content became a big bottleneck because every little tweak had to go through product engineers—which meant it would often take at least three weeks to make changes. Marketers were frustrated; designers had no ownership over the brand; and developers had to spend valuable time working on trivial updates.‍Enabling innovation at scale, while freeing up developer resourcesWith Webflow, innovation at speed is a huge benefit. We can now push changes or bring out a new feature in a week instead of a month.Justin Johnson, Web Developer, Dropbox SignHistorically, engineering sprints drove the main marketing site for HelloSign (now Dropbox Sign). Developers would be working hard to finalize features prior to launch; but at the same time, marketers needed to create assets to promote that same launch. Growth projects tied to revenue took precedence over content initiatives, but because the team lacked tools that would enable them to be more autonomous, everyone was frustrated by slow-moving processes. It was challenging to drive deadlines or even incur small changes because everyone relied on developer expertise.To bring the website under the full control of the marketing team and free up developers to focus on the core product, Dropbox Sign made the move from an engineering-managed custom-coded build to Webflow Enterprise in 2020. With more efficient processes and the content team now owning their CMS, the Dropbox Sign team has cut down the number of tickets it assigns to developers by 67%. With freed up developer resources, the team can now focus their efforts on process improvements and technical builds, like redesigning their pricing page and shipping features faster. During the orchestration of the official rebrand from HelloSign to Dropbox Sign in October 2022, the team relied on Webflow to streamline the cumbersome tasks. For example, updating all references of the word “HelloSign” to “Dropbox Sign” for 1,000 pages in 21 different languages, using Webflow's global code tags to build a script that was editable on every page, significantly simplifying the technicalities of the rebrand to two months. The Dropbox Sign team also leans on their dedicated Account Team for strategic expertise and guidance. “Whether we’re working on bigger projects like the full-site rebrand, or less-conventional ones, our Webflow Account Team has been an integral part in setting us up for success,” Justin says. ‍Working better together to build web experiences 4x fasterPre-Webflow, collaboration existed solely at cross-functional meetings. Now, collaboration is core to our team structure, workflows and shared goals.Justin Johnson, Web Developer, Dropbox SignToday, Web Developer Justin Johnson is responsible for the functionality and performance of the website. “It was eye-opening to see all the capabilities within the Webflow Enterprise scope,” he says. Justin and fellow Web Developer Briahna Santillana are embedded in the 40-person Dropbox Sign marketing department and work closest with the three-person content team. Being part of the marketing org provides important context for the developers, giving them agency and ownership over requests. The world of engineering can often feel like one long list of to-dos, but Webflow builds in a natural feedback loop that allows for more symbiotic partnerships. “We’re able to control our channels and work with cross-functional teams to achieve our goals together in Webflow,” Briahna says. To further increase efficiency, the Dropbox Sign team also leverages Webflow Enterprise feature, page branching, which allows teams to work on different pages of their site simultaneously. “Page branching has had an overwhelmingly positive impact on productivity and has allowed for a more collaborative team effort in shipping site updates quickly,” says Briahna. Split across multiple CMS collections without a unified structure or visual language, these resources were often inaccessible outside of specific marketing campaigns. In order to ramp up content production and drive more downloads, the team needed to quickly bring all assets into an intuitive Resource Center that was simple for readers to browse and easy to manage.Dropbox Sign’s design team started by creating templates for both the Resource Center “hub page” as well as individual pages. Since those would leverage Webflow’s CMS templating, the designs included a variety of style and content options that the team could swap accordingly based on resource type. “We leveraged Webflow’s CMS to ensure the new collection was as flexible as possible for the content team, while also tying in the styling options that our designers provided,” Justin says. What narrative would feel personal but universal? Once aligned on data points and the general flow, Grubhub nailed down the unique design treatments and animation styles with Wondersauce.Grubhub and Wondersauce’s approach was to tell personalized stories based on diners' top food choices and enable users to easily share the results. “Having a Webflow Enterprise solution available enabled us to focus on the build and leave infrastructure in Webflow’s capable hands,” says Megan. Lucid Software is the leader in visual collaboration, with solutions that help teams see and build out their ideas.
Used by large enterprises like Google, GE and NBC Universal, the Lucid Intelligence Platform helps teams align around a shared vision, clarify complexity, and collaborate visually, no matter where they're located.

For years, Lucid's developers had been using Drupal for its corporate blog, which contains a vast library of articles comprising upwards of 15,000 pages. However, they had started exploring an upgrade to a headless CMS solution with strong translation capabilities to provide content to users globally.
They evaluated several solutions, but none offered enough flexibility. While some systems offered an integration with Smartling for translations, only Contentful had a built-in translator; however, the system's cost was prohibitive.
“The cost of Contentful would have been astronomical for translating the amount of data we have,” said Matt Darrington, Sr. Manager Front-End Engineering at Lucid.
“They give you two free locales, then you pay like crazy if you want more.”
In addition to the pricing, Lucid's engineering team didn't want to be trapped by the monolithic approach to traditional content management systems.
“We didn't like Contentful's pricing model,” added Carson Fairbourn, Sr. Front-End Engineer at Lucid at Lucid. “You can't self-host the system, and once you're in Contentful, you're stuck with it unless you want to pull all your content out.”
Carson said that many of the available systems didn't offer HTML support, which was what they used in their legacy systems.
“We've got 10 years of blog posts that we would have to toss out if the new system lacked HTML compatibility,” he said.A backend built in Javascript for CMS developers
Given the team's requirements for translating large amounts of content into a wide range of languages, the decision to move to Directus was an easy one.
It didn't hurt that Directus is 100% JavaScript. Every time something broke with Drupal, the Lucid team would have to work together for about a week to figure it out. With Directus, changes and fixes are much easier.
“Whereas Drupal is written in PHP, Directus is all JavaScript, so it ties in closely with how we do things,” Carson said. “PHP is such an old language. It's robust and reliable, but it can be difficult to wrap your head around. JavaScript is our world.”Speeding-up self-migrations with extensible tooling
After implementing Directus, one of the first things the team did was leverage Directus's Schema Migration Endpoints to create a tool that validates and sanitizes existing HTML for fast and easy migration between web properties.
“Using Directus Schema endpoints, we built a utility that replaces the manual process of copying templates from one site to another, saving hours of work every week,” Matt said. “You can transfer things from one site to another within moments.”
Carson said their schema tool also enables them to validate that terminology is consistent across templates and sites, which improves data quality.
“If a developer builds a new template for our content creators, we want to make sure text fields have the same naming conventions,” he said, adding that when there are multiple ways to refer to the same type of content, it gets messy.
Now they can simply export the form from Directus and run it through the tool which checks it against rules we've created to ensure consistency.
“If it sees an error, it sends a notification to correct the problem before the template goes into production.”
Matt said it took just a couple days to create the tool, and it works really well.
“If I make a change to a template on site A, I can simply run a command to make the same change on site B,” he said. “It's 10 times better than the system we had, which was copy-paste from a Google Doc and hope and pray that our HTML was good.”Looking ahead for Lucid
The team is looking for more ways to automate workflows with Directus schema migration endpoints as well as Directus Extensions, which allow you to build, modify or expand any feature needed for an app or project.
“Other CMS platforms try to shut you down, but Directus opens things up,” Carson said. “You have endless possibilities for how you use it. You make it your own, but benefit from a framework that's solid.
"Every other CMS I've worked with feels archaic, but with Directus, it's like we're leaving the Dark Ages behind.”
In addition to the product itself, the Lucid team appreciates the support they receive.
“I've hopped on a call with folks from Directus many times, and they've been invaluable,” he said. “It's a huge plus, because it shows that they're not just in it for the paycheck – they really want us to succeed."

That’s the idea behind MightyHQ, a platform designed to provide all the necessary tools to help businesses thrive. And with employees in the U.S., Europe and Asia, it’s catching on quick with entrepreneurs worldwide.
“MightyHQ is our brainchild,” said Razvan Neagu, self-titled “Chief Nerd,” who, along with co-founder and “Chief Creative,” Schad Deesing, worked in the eCommerce space for years prior to launching the company.

The quest for a unified solution
When they started MightyHQ, Razvan and Schad pieced the platform together with point solutions like Shopify, Zendesk, ShipStation and others, but quickly learned that having multiple, disjointed solutions makes everything slower.
Plus, putting all of their eggs in Shopify’s basket was a risk – any downtime in Shopify’s service would be catastrophic for MightyHQ’s customers.
“Point solutions all have many limitations, and integrating additional functionalities meant adding more apps on top,” Razvan said. “When it was just Schad and I, we could keep track of it all, but as our team grew, that approach became untenable.”
Razvan needed a unified platform that was robust, easy to use and extensible, so they could eventually merge all of their existing tools. Directus was the perfect fit.
“The first step was to consolidate all of our data – product data, marketing data, customer data – with Directus as our single source of truth,” he said. “Soon, it became the backend for all of our services.”
Powerful features for any digital business
Recommended by a colleague, Directus gained points with Razvan because it was open-source and unopinionated. The powerful Directus API was another big selling point, since it enabled him to connect data to virtually any tool or service.
“Directus is our CRM, our inventory and fulfillment apps, our customer portal, and our loyalty subscriptions email and SMS app, all rolled into one,” he said. “Plus we use it to automate all kinds of different marketing tasks, so we can start up, grow and manage a wide range of brands and ecommerce businesses.”
Directus also provides a single source of truth that he can leverage for any use case.
“Let’s say we wanted to test a new product,” he said. “Easy – go create a new table and relationships and it’s done. So that’s huge.”
Directus Flows are another key feature Razvan uses frequently.
“When a new customer is created, a ‘cheat sheet’ is generated that outlines every data point about the customer and its interactions with MightyHQ eCommerce sites,” he said. “We also use Postgres triggers to calculate order totals.”
Ease of use is also an important factor for MightyHQ. “We have tens of thousands of customers and transactions, and I’m the only one who’s ever logged into the Directus dashboard,” Razvan said.
The need for speed
According to Razvan, there's one top-line benefit that matters most to MightyHQ – and it's speed. “Speed to develop and speed to debug is critical, and I don't see that anywhere else,” he said.
Directus makes it fast and easy to spin up a new ecommerce site leveraging the existing data.
“Say I have the idea to launch a new page offering golf products,” he said. “A push of a button triggers the workflow and, boom! Everything gets created, and all you have to do is configure the variables.”
“Within an hour, I can have a new business up and running. It’s at least 10 times faster.”
Plus, by integrating all of the services associated with running an ecommerce business, Directus saves MightyHQ time and money. “in a world where certain niches with high chargeback rates of 3 - 5%, ours are at or below 1%,” he said. “Why? Because all of our data is in one place. We can automate customer responses and provide self-service capabilities, as well, eliminating a lot of administrative overhead and labor costs.”
But that’s not all – using Directus slashes the cost of implementing and maintaining multiple point solutions and services, as well.

Large retailers and local restaurants became essential services overnight, and as a result, they relied on NCR’s contactless payment, self-checkout, and world class services to keep their businesses afloat and running. Adjusting to exponential growth in the matter of months, NCR saw this as a crucial inflection point for the business — one that challenged the team to assess how they can best serve their growing customer base. Upgrading to Webflow Enterprise: NCR’s push to modernize their websiteUpgrading to Webflow Enterprise gave us the peace of mind and power to scale and deliver new web experiences rapidly.Dan Dawson, Sr. Manager of Digital Properties, NCRAs NCR began exploring how to better handle increased demand, leadership was invested in modernizing the website. Specifically, they wanted to increase their velocity of web development without breaking the bank. They believed a stronger, more flexible web foundation would unlock their team’s ability to build unique web experiences and to spin up more landing pages — something they deemed impossible with their existing digital experience platform (DXP). “We never would have invested time in doing this with our incumbent CMS because frankly, it was too expensive to even begin thinking about,” Dan Dawson, Senior Manager of Digital Properties at NCR, explained.In 2020, the team had turned to Webflow’s self-serve offering to tackle one-off landing pages, which served as a temporary solution. But over time, NCR’s ability to meet growing business demand hinged on their ability to tackle large web projects on tight timelines — and that’s when the team knew their existing development processes were no longer sufficient. After seeing the security features, advanced collaboration workflows, and hands-on account support that came with Webflow Enterprise, the team realized upgrading was an overall better fit for their needs than their incumbent solution. And not only was the team already comfortable working in the platform — upgrading to Enterprise also meant they could move quicker, save money, and bring their visual dreams to life on the web.A more collaborative web development experience Our design and development teams are much more integrated during the build process. Designers have more autonomy, and engineers can focus on the most impactful work — allowing us to deliver new web pages faster.Dan Dawson, Sr. Manager of Digital Properties, NCRHistorically, web development at NCR was a long, involved process. The team would file Jira tickets summarizing the project request that would then be passed on to the design team. The design team would then hand off their work to developers, who then tried to build and bring these designs to life, which often resulted in a tedious, back-and-forth process. Developers became pixel pushers, often stuck with some level of guesswork due to disjointed web processes.Building web experiences in a visual development platform has broken down silos between the design and development teams, enabling better collaboration. Designers who traditionally work solely with tools like Figma can now also work in the Webflow Designer, identifying necessary adjustments or potential issues before finalizing the design — significantly reducing review cycles with developers.  And when the team is working with template or component-driven pages, multiple designers and editors can work in tandem thanks to page branching, which has become critical for the NCR team. Specifically, Dan explains, “Page branching allowed our team to cut down the time it takes to go from design to production by 3x, while maintaining code governance and quality. This feature brings version control to a visual development interface, which has significantly accelerated our speed to market."Working with experts: An extension of the NCR teamUpgrading to Webflow Enterprise also provided NCR with the level of dedicated support and expertise they needed as they continued to evolve their digital presence. NCR wanted this site to have a completely different look and feel — while working with a 6-week deadline, lean marketing team, and limited budget.In addition to their dedicated Account team, NCR worked with a Webflow Enterprise Partner, Whiteboard, for this build and found they could collaborate and design substantially more engaging web experiences than would have otherwise been possible. In an industry traditionally lagging behind technology leaders, the company is leading the way for the industry toward a more automated, AI-driven, efficient mortgage experience, transforming 10-15 year old processes and eliminating time-consuming, error-prone manual tasks that slow things down.
Run by mortgage people for mortgage people, Novus operates roughly 50 branches across 47 states, enabling customers to apply for a loan, verify income and assets, digitally review and ensign signatures, and submit all their paperwork from a mobile device.
Mobile alerts and messaging keep customers informed during escrow, as well. Their approach to mortgages is truly revolutionary, and a company like that needs a website that communicates their unique value proposition while providing the tools that make it easy for employees and customers to leverage all of the technological advantages it offers.
“How much we invest in technology sets us apart,” said Daniel Laughland, SVP of Software Engineering at Novus Home Mortgage, who leads a small team of about a dozen engineers and developers.
“Everyone can apply online for loans, but how do you translate that internally? How do you build the tools you need to be the true tech leader in this space? How does proprietary software fit into that, and how do we integrate best-of-breed third-party solutions?
"Most importantly, how can we make this usable for everybody?”
Control and adoption were key
According to Laughland, one of his goals was to make the company’s website – where all the loans are processed – more flexible and accessible to loan officers with different technical skill levels.
“We wanted to try to get the best happy median we could, where loan officers could customize their customer-facing UI without leaning on the marketing department to do everything for them,” he said.
“We didn’t want to have to go in and make every little change, but with so many loan officers making changes, it can’t be a complete blank canvas.”
Another factor was ease of adoption.
“We wanted to have a common platform for everyone, where they can access marketing content and sales tools,” he said.
“It wasn’t just about an aesthetic redesign, but creating a foundation for a bigger, more efficient business engine.”
Going headless
Laughland said his team had been using Titan CMS, which is similar to Wordpress, but based on .NET instead of PHP.
“It’s not a headless CMS,” he said. “It was hard for us to envision a world in which we could extend and customize the platform in the ways we wanted to, or easily make changes to templates. There isn’t a lot of documentation for the system, so if you’re stuck, you’d need a consultant.”
The team needed a platform that would scale effectively, that wasn’t too complex to customize. They evaluated several solutions, including Strapi and Contentful.
“We needed both a public-facing and internal-facing site, and I figured that would probably require building two separate apps,” Laughland said.
“Luckily, we found Directus.”
The ‘Wow’ factor
During the Directus demo, Laughland was blown away by the roles and permissions capabilities.
“Everything was great, but Roles and Permissions was one feature that made me say, ‘Wow, they really put a lot of thought into this.' There is an awesome balance between power and ease of use, which were both critical components for us.”
Two other features that caught Laughland’s eye were Live Preview, which allows you to show changes in your website collection before publishing and without the need to refresh the browser, and Directus Flows, which enables custom, event-driven data processing and task automation.
These features have really helped to accelerate adoption within Novus.
“There was some standard hesitation about using a new platform, and people were wondering if it would live up to our expectations,” Laughland said. “Seeing the speed at which we could iterate on database models and labels with Directus, along with the internal user-facing capabilities, generated a lot of enthusiasm."
"With Directus, we can really focus on creating a beautiful front-end design, and not worry about the backend.”
A smooth transition
The transition from Titan was “smooth sailing,” according to Laughland, who said the goal was to launch the internal loan officer microsite prior to the external-facing website.
The frontend was built using Gatsby and Lambda, and they may move to using Gastro or Remix in the future. Fortunately, any frontend works well with Directus.
User feedback, Laughland said, has been very positive. “There was a lot of excitement over having more control and being able to see everything in the dashboards.
"We didn’t want loan officers to feel like there was an approval process between them and actually controlling their sites, but compliance was still important,” he said.
“With the new system, we can review changes in bulk once a week rather than having to stop what we’re doing every time something changes – that way we can catch major errors and problems, while helping people stay productive.”
Innovation through iteration
Laughland and his team have started turning to Directus as a prototyping tool for Minimum Viable Product (MVP) design.
“Using Directus, we can quickly spin up a working piece of functionality and talk about how to develop ideas further,” he said, adding that with a small team, the agility to try out new ideas is key to productivity and innovation.
“Directus is definitely making us a lot more capable than we would be trying to go it alone,” he said. “The more we can iterate on these initiatives, the better they are, and the better we are from a technology perspective.
"With Directus, we can realize our bigger vision of being a technology leader in the mortgage space.”

From its humble beginnings as a newspaper cartoon to a global entertainment company with over 100 attractions in ten countries, Ripley's has consistently evolved to meet audience expectations.
However, their online presence was struggling to keep pace with their innovative spirit.
The company's web ecosystem, spread across multiple Wordpress multisite installations, had become a patchwork of inconsistent designs and user experiences. This digital fragmentation was at odds with Ripley's legacy of captivating audiences with unified, engaging content.
For a brand that prides itself on leaving lasting impressions on visitors, it was clear that their digital presence needed to be just as remarkable as their attractions.
Suzanne Smagala-Potts – Senior Manager of Digital Development at Ripley's – led her team as they embarked on a search for a modern, flexible content management system that could unify their digital assets and set the stage for future growth.
The Search for a Solution
Ripley's digital team faced a monumental task. They needed to consolidate multiple websites, improve brand consistency, and enhance the user experience across all their digital touchpoints.
"We decided to go scorched earth, get rid of everything, and build from scratch," recalled Smagala-Potts. "We needed more robust tech stacks to really accomplish the goals that we wanted."
The team's wishlist was extensive. They needed a platform that could:
Consolidate all content under a single domain for improved SEO
Support multiple languages to cater to their global audience
Provide granular user permissions for different teams and roles
Offer a flexible content management system for their vast library of oddities and stories
Ripley's issued an RFP and began evaluating various content management systems with help from their agency partner, EY Design Studio. Many vendors offered standard demos, but one stood out from the crowd.
"When we had our demo with Directus, they absolutely incorporated everything I had asked for, explaining how it can be accomplished," Smagala-Potts recalled. "It was definitely a personalized one."

"The standardization and templating is making it very useful for our end-users, and it's easy to use for a non-tech user to be able to go in and create content," Smagala-Potts said.
The transition from their old system to Directus was smooth, with the team quickly adapting to the new platform. The implementation not only solved Ripley's immediate challenges but also opened up new possibilities for their digital strategy.

"We're about to onboard about 40 to 50 new users with limited roles specific to their markets," Smagala-Potts said. This expansion will empower location managers to update critical information like operating hours and ticket prices, ensuring visitors always have the most up-to-date information.
Ecommerce Integration
One of the most exciting developments on the horizon is the integration of ecommerce functionality into Directus.
"The biggest project that's coming down the road is incorporating ecom into Directus," Smagala-Potts said. This integration will allow for a seamless ticket-buying experience that matches the visual appeal and functionality of the main site.
"We're going to be building upsell capability into our ticketing portal. So as visitors buy tickets, we offer things like: 'Oh, you bought this, would you like to add on a penguin painting experience or a stingray experience?'" she added, highlighting the potential for increased revenue through a more engaging purchase process.
Continuous Improvement
The team at Ripley's has embraced a culture of continuous improvement, regularly identifying new ways to enhance their digital presence.
"We have a whole list of goals that we're looking to accomplish within the next couple of months like adding new components or adding new connections," Smagala-Potts says.

The company reaches millions of participants worldwide with online courses featuring internationally renowned speakers on diverse subjects. It also features one of the world’s largest online libraries of peace-building resources.
Its philanthropic arm donates to a wide range of environmental, health and social justice causes.
Tony Macias, Tech Lead at The Shift Network, came on board in 2021 to work on TSN’s mobile app. At the time, the company was discussing the possibility of evolving its tech stack.
“There’s a point when what you’ve created begins to grow, and eventually you realize you made your first technology decisions without realizing how big you were going to be,” he said.
“We realized we were outdated compared to others in our space.”
Transitioning from Drupal
Tony wanted to bring the technology he was using for the mobile app to the main website, which was previously built with Drupal.
“Drupal has been in the game so long, even before Wordpress,” he said. “Through the years, they’ve tried to adapt the platform to remain competitive – first with Wordpress then with the headless trend – but they haven’t been able to change everything."
"The API is a little clunky, because it wasn’t purpose-built to be a headless platform.”
The new platform had to be accessible for non-technical as well as technical users. Non-technical staff are often tasked with updating content to support the company’s eLearning model, which relies on delivering a variety of media, from videos to podcasts, blog posts, ebooks and more.
Although Tony had used another headless CMS solution, Sanity, for the mobile app, a team member suggested he take a look at Directus for the main website.
Tony quickly built out a proof of concept with Directus, and the team agreed it was the best fit.
“The intuitive Directus UI enables non-technical people to create fields and make changes, without having to write code,” he said. “And, the fact that Directus was always a headless platform is a big win.”
Directus’s unopinionated approach made it an easy add to the existing tech stack, as well.
“What I like about Directus is that it provides a default opinion on how to do things, but you have the option to do in another way, and Directus doesn’t care,” Tony said.
Composable, efficient, and un-opinionatedTony appreciates the composable nature of the Directus platform.
“As a developer, I love the ‘Lego block’ approach, which makes it really easy to update or add components to your original project,” he said. “For example, if I want to add ecommerce functionality, I can just drop it in."
"With Drupal, making that change would impact the entire system.”
Tony was also impressed with the platform’s out-of-the-box media management capabilities. Thanks to Directus roles and permissions, non-technical members of TSN’s staff are empowered to make changes or additions to the website safely, without having to write code.
“Things that would take a month of work with other platforms can be built out in Directus in seconds,” he said. “Anyone can make those changes safely, without writing code, and we don’t need to worry about them breaking the system.
"Without the granular roles and permissions capabilities in Directus, we wouldn’t even think about giving staff access.”
Directus saves Tony and his team a lot of development time, which enables them to meet tight deadlines.
“If it wasn't for Directus, we wouldn't be delivering on our dates as a team, and the website project wouldn’t be as successful,” he said.
What’s next for TSN?
In the near future, Tony plans to leverage Directus Flows to enhance the TSN website’s functionality.
He also intends to use Directus to build an in-house affiliate system.
“Directus is a great tool, and the fact that everything is API-based makes it easy to connect with other systems in our tech stack,” he said. “I see Directus helping us to optimize resources and bandwidth, and improving user experience.
"I'm very confident that this was a good horse to choose for the race.”
In fact, Directus has become Tony’s go-to tool for building digital projects.
“There are a few solutions that I have on my list of products that I will choose no matter where I work, and Directus is one of them.”
