Al Reyami Construction Equipment Rental rents out a wide range of equipment including compressors, generators, portable cabins, containers and other construction equipment. It is based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and also operates in several other countries, including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, and India. It is part of the Al Reyami group, a global conglomerate founded in 1994.

Business Challenge
Al Reyami Construction Equipment Rentals was using a Windows-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system built using Visual Basic 6. The backend was SQL Server. When the company opened offices in Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia, it deployed the ERP system regionally. However, the reports created in the different offices could not be automatically combined. The UAE office had to manually create a single, standardized report from them. The company at times had to change the settings on its server. Whenever settings were reset, the ERP system required that all of the company's 50 Windows machine be reconfigured, or the machines would not be able to access the system. In addition, the client software was not compatible with Windows 8, so the machines could not be updated from Windows 7, causing potential security risks. "We knew we had to solve the problem," remembers Sajil Sidharthan, Al Reyami Construction's Equipment Rentals Systems Manager. "Everything took too much time, and we were constantly finding new problems. The only solution, we realized, was to build a new system."

Solution
Sajil turned to Alpha Anywhere as the new enterprise development and deployment platform because it required less code than other tools, was easy to learn, and would let him build a powerful enterprise solution for both the Web and mobile devices.
"Even though Alpha Anywhere is easy to use, it has very powerful features," he says. "You can build extremely sophisticated applications with it. The ability to write cross-platform applications was an important reason we chose it. We'll also be building mobile applications — and we plan to make use of its offline features as well." The Alpha Anywhere-created system, called B-Whizview, is the company's enterprise-wide system for invoicing, financial management, inventory, human resources, and more. Alpha Anywhere will be used to build future business-to-business and business-to-employee mobile applications.
B-Whizview is also a comprehensive, end-to-end app solution for running every part of Al Reyami Construction Equipment Rentals' business. It will work with the company's offices in multiple countries. When fully deployed, it includes seven modules:

The company saved tens of thousands of dollars in development costs and software licensing costs by selecting Alpha Anywhere. According to Sajil, by using Alpha Anywhere, the company was able to develop the application two to three times faster than if it had used another method. "There were only 2 people involved in this development project," exaplins Sajil, "myself and Alpha consultant Kanishka Basak. Kanishka helped me learn the software — particularly the integration with Fusion Charts. The support and motivation of our CEO Mr.Harshavardhan was also very important. Without him we would not have been able to complete this project." "Perhaps even more important than the cost savings we're realizing with Alpha Anywhere are its powerful enterprise platform features," Sajil says. "We will be building a mobile app for sales executives and engineers. Sales executives will be able to log onto the system from anywhere, and see all the invoices for any customer, and will be able to print outstanding invoices without having to contact the accounts department. Engineers will be able to get all the information about any piece of equipment. They'll be able to scan an equipment code and get comprehensive information about its rental history and service details." In addition, reports no longer need to be manually created from reports from multiple countries. It can all be done from right within the Alpha Anywhere-created system. Sajil says that the system may save between 100 and 150 man-hours per month in just a single office. "Alpha Anywhere has helped us tremendously," Sajil says. "We expect to get even more benefits because we've only explored between 40% and 45% of what the software can do."

Business Challenge
Sports analytics are crucial to understanding opponents' strengths and weaknesses, and fine tuning game-day strategy. While professional athletic teams use high-end analytics technology, university sports teams typically record game stats on paper or with basic computing tools. This was the case for the Brock Badgers, which were using an Excel spreadsheet to track in-game statistics, such as each players' shots, the positions they were in at the time of scoring, and more. Assistant Coach Gary Miotto wanted to create an app that would let him automate this process so he could measure in-game action and player performance from the desktop, web, or mobile device. He also wanted to slice and dice the data into custom reports that he could review with his coaching staff after each game to help shape strategy for the next match up. The app had to be simple to use in between the lightning-fast plays on the ice. And with no programming experience, Miotto needed a platform that let him build the professional "moneyball for hockey" app of his dreams without coding.
He rapidly and visually designed the database, forms, and business logic; and then connected that design to mobile, cloud, and desktop user experiences—all with no past programming experience.
Solution
Miotto took a shot at using Alpha Anywhere to build his comprehensive hockey analytics app. Over a period of a few years, coaching with travel youth hockey teams, a Junior team, and a university hockey team, he had created a world-class app customized to his exacting requirements. Using Alpha's myriad RAD components, wizards, and "coding optional" technology, he rapidly and visually designed the database, forms, and business logic; and then connected that design to mobile, cloud, and desktop user experiences—all with no past programming experience. He also manually integrated the app with Corel Draw to add additional tools for designing reports. Miotto was confident his finished app, the likes of which was never before seen in a university hockey league, had the potential to become a secret strategic weapon for building his team's success.

Miotto is now using his app to easily track, store, and analyze the data most critical to increasing his team's competitiveness. The app's customization lets Miotto record high-level to granular statistics, such as which players scored from what positions, where the goalie was at the time of scoring, and over 24 other competitive stats. The app's simple UX lets Miotto record all this action as it happens, without missing a beat in coaching his team. Post game, Miotto distills the analytics into a dozen custom reports which he dresses up in Corel Draw, prints on huge sheets of paper, and hangs in the locker room for the coaching staff and players to review and analyze. With accurate data in front of them—data no other team in the league has access to—the coaching staff has the precision insights they need to make better decisions about game-day strategy and player development. Miotto's app has become a coach favorite, and is now an integral part of the staff's secret sauce to support players' growth and the team's winning record. The app is so well-tuned for capturing and analyzing sports analytics that Miotto is now working to bring his app to the NHL level.

Entrepreneur Scott Moore had identified a niche in the real estate market as being well-suited for the launch of a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) business. He needed to quickly and inexpensively build a mobile Web site and service that would handle all the elements such a service needs. In order for the new service to succeed financially, it would have to be prototyped, launched, maintained, and updated with a minimum of work.

Solution
To build the Dwellpoint service and site, Moore turned to the Alpha Anywhere application development and deployment environment and Alpha's SaaS Jumpstart Framework. The framework is software that provides all the necessary components and pages that are standard for SaaS businesses, including user authentication, client portals, and free trial status. The framework eases the startup process by allowing entrepreneurs to focus on the business itself rather than the technical elements required to launch it.
"I don't see how I could possibly have launched the business so quickly without using the SaaS Jumpstart Framework and Alpha Anywhere," he says. "The framework handled all of the Software-as-a-Service components. You don't have to re-invent the wheel when you're using it, because the components are already pre-built. Overall, it's plug-and-play ready. You install it on top of Alpha Anywhere, and you're ready to go."
Moore has a background as a programmer, and has built other SaaS services with Alpha Anywhere, including the PetSitClick dog-walking and pet-sitting service. He also participated in the development of the SaaS Jumpstart Framework. But he says that Alpha Anywhere and the framework are simple enough that entrepreneurs without much development skills can develop compelling prototypes and launch SaaS businesses without having much technical expertise.
"They can absolutely leverage Alpha Anywhere and this framework to quickly and affordably launch new SaaS businesses," he says. Moore cites two main benefits from the use of Alpha Anywhere and SaaS Jumpstart Framework - speed of development and reduced costs, both of which are vital for entrepreneurs in a fast-changing business environment that requires being able to seize a business opportunity once you identify it. "The time to market was only a matter of months," he says. "I was able to quickly fill a niche that I saw had been unfilled. With Alpha's software, I was able to get right down to building the service without preparatory work." Without Alpha Anywhere and the framework, he says, he would have had to hire outside developers to build the site and service, which would have required him to spend his time raising money rather than getting a business up and running. "I would have been one of those guys running around trying to raise capital to hire a team of programmers, rather than launching my site," he says. "I would have been behind the eight ball before I even got started. By the time I would have raised enough money to begin development with a traditional approach, someone else might have already seized the opportunity and beat me to market. The organization embraces a Culture of Coverage and promotes assisting uninsured patients in finding health coverage whether that coverage is retrospective as with Medicaid or prospective as with Health Plans available on the State or Federal Exchange.One of IHMS’ major service lines is Patient Screening & Eligibility Services and forms the core of the organization’s efforts to assist patients. IHMS’ efforts start with onsite Eligibility Analysts working at the hospital to Field Services personnel working with patients once they return to the community. IHMS is about eliminating barriers to filing an application for coverage and to provide practical assistance to patients and their families. The goal is to find everyone a healthcare home.

When IHMS first started their business in 1996 they employed a patient accounting system for small hospitals and over time the system became obsolete and could no longer support their business model. While the system handled hospital based government billing and follow-up well, it did not handle the Eligibility side of their business which continued to grow and despite IHMS’ attempts to modify the system it became clear that a change was needed. In reality, IHMS realized it had simply outgrown its legacy system and that a new one was needed and needed yesterday.So began the search for a company and a healthcare app solution. IHMS wanted to build a comprehensive software solution that was both flexible and could keep up with technological changes and handle the ever-changing healthcare industry. IHMS reached out to Alpha Software. The Alpha Anywhere rapid development and deployment platform represented a much better way to build a system – via a desktop and web application – that could manage all the organization’s needs, while maintaining a high level of security and meeting all HIPAA related compliance standards. Alpha Anywhere proved to be clearly superior to other healtchare app offerings available on the market, due to its low-code approach, which allowed for a faster ramp-up time and the availability of highly skilled Alpha Anywhere developers to build and update the application.
The Alpha Anywhere system tracks all IHMS accounts, allows for faster updates, and enables a wide range of reporting formats for IHMS’ clients. The system also triggers specific activities based on a set of conditions as they apply to an individual patient’s account and the work being performed. The new system, which requires less training time for new employees, also allows IHMS employees to easily work remotely, even when they’re on-site at hospitals interviewing patients at their bedside.

Knectsoft employees had to turn in expense reports every week on Monday morning by filling out an Excel spreadsheet, printing three copies of it, copying their expense receipts, and attaching the receipts to the printouts. "We thought that we could make the process easier on ourselves by creating a mobile app where we could enter the information, and have the system handle everything from there — automatically create a PDF, including photos of the receipts, and have it emailed," says Lee Haddox, IT Manager for Knectsoft. "As we thought about it, we realized that this was something that might be useful not just internally, but something that we could sell as an app and a service as well."

Solution
Knectsoft decided to write the app not just for itself, but also to sell it to businesses. They have used many different development tools over the years, but they immediately knew that Alpha Anywhere would be ideal for developing the app. "It would have taken a tremendous amount of time if we had to write the app multiple times for different platforms," says Haddox. "With Alpha Anywhere, we could write the app once and then deploy it to iOS, Android, and to Windows Phone in the future." They were familiar with Alpha Anywhere from past development work, and also knew that Alpha Software constantly added new features to it. "That was a big plus as well," he says. "I knew we'd be updating the app, and with Alpha Software, we'd be able to continually make it better." He found the List control feature especially useful. "The List become the app's cornerstone," he says. "Alpha has added a lot of functionality to it. We piggybacked onto it and used it to store photos of receipts taken with a phone's camera. We also scaled the images with tools built into Alpha Anywhere. That's important because the images need to be uploaded to a server and stored in a database. Smaller images use less cellular data, so people don't go over their data limits with their providers."
The completed app, called KnectXpense lets people record all of their expenses, fuel card charges, and mileage in an iOS or Android app. The app can photograph receipts, track mileage, and research past purchases or travel. It also uses the GPS capabilities of the phone to record where expenses were recorded, which is useful for salesmen who often travel. All of this data is upload to a server. Knectsoft also built a backend to allow its customers to manage account administration, search for transactions, and print reports. Additionally, the backend can generate the automated report PDFs and email them to employees/managers. The app is available on Apple's App Store and in Google Play. It is used by individuals and by companies, which are charged on monthly, subscription, per-user basis.

Results/Benefits
Knectsoft reaped considerable benefits using Alpha Anywhere to build the mobile app, including faster time to market, reduced costs, and having the tools to design an app with all the features they wanted. They were able to speed the expense report process in their own business, as well as realizing a previous nonexistent revenue stream — the KnectXpense app they sell to businesses. Haddox says that he showed the app to a developer who specializes in native iOS development and asked how long it would have taken him to write it as a native iOS app. "It would have taken him up to 15% more time writing it as a native app," he says. "But keep in mind, that's only for one platform. Without Alpha Anywhere, we would have had to start writing an Android app from scratch as well. That would have more than doubled our time. Updating the separate apps would also be time consuming because we would have to update each of them separately." He says that it only took three months to write the app and backend system. That allowed it to get to market more quickly, which in turn means it started generating revenue more quickly. The app currently is in use by just over 20 companies, with more on the way. "I glad we didn't have to write the app without Alpha Anywhere," Haddox says. "It combines ease of use with powerful features, and made it easy to write the app once and then deploy it on multiple platforms."

It provides pension funds, retirement systems, trusts, and insurance companies with information about people's life statuses, including date of birth, address, social security number, obituary information, and location of beneficiaries.

LifeStatus360's customers subscribe to the service in order to keep down pension costs, ensure compliance with the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) which sets standards for pension plans, to find unclaimed property, and to maintain accurate lists of people's current life statuses. To meet its customers' demands, LifeStatus360 must provide that information speedily and accurately. It subscribes to death information from states' Vital Records departments, and to the Social Security Administration's Death Master File (DMF), and must adhere to very strict privacy requirements. The company was using technology powered by Microsoft ASP.NET to run its web site and provide information to customers on a previous Web site called SmallWorldSolutions (www.smworldsolutions.com). It found ASP.NET slow, cumbersome, inflexible, and difficult to work with. "We made the decision to rebrand and retool," says LifeStatus360 President Chris Scaramastra. "Our goal was to bring in technology including HTML 5 and CSS 3 that would let us keep up with changes on the Internet, include a built-in security framework, allow for easy updates, and let us offer mobile apps on smartphones and tablets. We were looking for a solution that would let us grow by breaking out of the pack and providing customers with a new way of interfacing and working with PII (personally identifiable information) data."

Solution
LifeStatus360 chose Alpha Anywhere because of its speed and flexibility for building apps and web sites, ability to quickly make updates, security capabilities, and ease with which it can build web and mobile apps for multiple platforms. "Security is built right into Alpha Anywhere," says David Wiley, head of Information Systems & Operations for LifeStatus360. "Beyond that, Alpha Anywhere is far superior to our previous way of doing things. For example, we can build prototypes and go into production now far more quickly. Alpha Anywhere is constantly upgrading, providing new functions and features, interfaces with multiple data sources (such as SAS, Siebel, and Salesforce). The agile development process lends itself well to Alpha Anywhere. With it we can organically develop our solutions to evolve the technology quickly based on our customers' needs, the requirements of the market and government regulation. " LifeStatus360 selected Steve Wood to develop the entire application using Alpha Anywhere and MySQL, while following a strict Agile Methodology to control the development process. Because the application required very fast results when searching more than a hundred millions rows of data, Wood deployed a third party indexing utility called Omnidex, from Disc, Inc. Steve has built several dozen applications using Alpha Anywhere and believes this is an ideal route for small, large and enterprise web or mobile applications. "Alpha Anywhere gave me all the tools I need in a single, easy-to-use platform," he says. "Particularly useful was its fast prototyping, because we went through many iterations of the Web site before we came to exactly what LifeStatus360 wanted. Moving from prototype to production is very easy as well." LifeStatus360 customers use its Alpha Anywhere-created Software as a Service (SaaS) system to get comprehensive information about people's life statuses on a secure web site. They can get the information fast and more easily than with the previous SaaS platform, with a high degree of security. The system receives data from LifeStatus360 customers via the company's LS360 File Format. LifeStatus360 developed LS360 File Format Analysis software to assist its customer with data transfers.

LifeStatus360 has gained significant benefits from the use of Alpha Anywhere, including reduced costs and faster development time. "We would have had to hire additional developers if we had created the new SaaS platform with a different tool," says Wiley. "We did this work with just a two-man shop. With a different tool we would have had to outsource development and hire an entire team. So it saved us a great deal of money." Alpha Anywhere also cut the amount of time it took to build the new SaaS platform, reducing the time to market. LifeStatus360 showed versions of the service to its customers, and used their feedback to upgrade the system in weeks. "In our old system, we couldn't have made even those kinds of simple changes in six months," Wiley says. Scaramastra adds that with Alpha Anywhere, they were able to build a more modern-looking web site with a far better user interface than if they had used the ASP.NET. "One of the great things about Alpha Anywhere is that now that the Web site is finished, it will be easy to port it as a mobile app to Android and iOS," he says. He also says that LifeStatus360 is targeting larger customers, "and because of the software and engineering environment we've built with Alpha Anywhere, its built-in security and its development flexibility, we know we'll be able to easily do that." "Alpha's built-in security helped us to pass the AltiusIT web application security audit. Paper-based systems for performing equipment checks are commonplace within mining, and a proven method that has worked for years.  However, there were numerous downsides to this method for one major mining company.  The results from these audits needed to be hand entered back into the Company's SAP system, and the equipment work orders printed out and distributed by hand to the right people.  This produced a significant time lag for critical audit information and increased company risk around equipment.
Company management felt that a mobile data collection app that leveraged workers' personal smartphones would save costs, while allowing the Company to streamline critical equipment checks, significantly improve data accuracy, and streamline safety processes.
The Company had several challenges to digital transformation. First, the Company lacked knowledgeable mobile app development staff and resources to tackle the project. Second, the data collection app had to integrate seamlessly with existing systems of record (like SAP), and resulting work orders needed to be distributed quickly to the right employee within the 400+ user base. And given the physical location of equipment in mines, the app had to work offline -- deep in mines where there was limited or no WiFi connection.
The Company wanted a development platform that would allow them to build the app in-house so that they were not dependent on an outside services organization for all the development work and future app updates.  As a result, developing, deploying and updating the apps needed to be fast and simple.

Solution

The new equipment inspection app has increased the overall productivity of employees -- both within mines and at the home office.
Workers saw an immediate productivity improvement as they worked off of the latest equipment information and eliminated paper-chasing within underground operations. Automatic data capture dramatically sped equipment inspections, improved data accuracy and removed mistakes and lost paper - common problems with manual data logging. The Company was able to reallocate office staff to more valuable business needs because they no longer had to input manual equipment checklists from paper.

When their 6-year old twin boys entered the first grade in Los Angeles back in 2006, Jay and Tracie Oken received a printed class directory so they could coordinate play dates, carpooling, and other activities. While it contained important information for parents, “it was a mess,” said company president, Tracie Oken. “So we volunteered to create a new one for the school and before long, we helped other schools in the area.” In 2008, they launched their desktop application and currently serve Parent Teacher Organizations (PTO) in approximately 1,000 schools across the nation.

While the MySchool desktop solution had served customers very well in the past, by 2012 the company realized it was time for a change. “Most people were ready to get rid of paper,” said Tracie. “With the prevalence of smart phones and tablets, it was clear what our customers wanted: it was time to move to an online and mobile platform.”
Originally, the company wanted to leverage the development team they had in place using HTML5, but it was quickly clear that there were unexpected complexities when adapting HTML5 for different touch capabilities and screen sizes. By October, the team knew they needed a different approach, but that left them with a tight deadline just six months before the spring sales season. If they couldn’t make a May 1 deadline, they would miss one of the two top selling seasons, and the revenue that went with it.

Solution
Once MySchoolAnywhere launched its online and mobile solution, the company realized a 60% revenue increase in under a year. Not only were schools very happy with the mobile application, but it was easy to use and scale, giving MySchoolAnywhere the opportunity to upsell customers to its premium services. Since May 1st, more than 350 schools have signed up. At about 600 families per school, that's 210,000 people-thousands of logins per day.
The team at MySchoolAnywhere searched for the right solution to their business problem. They identified four ways that Alpha could help in ways other approaches did not:
1. A Fast Path to Mobile and Web Apps: The MySchoolAnywhere team built a design document for the online and mobile application from their desktop and showed developers what they needed to do, step-bystep. The Alpha platform offered built-in capabilities for reporting, emailing, login access, and more. “If we had to build the core from scratch, it would have taken three times as long. 2. A Tool to Lower Development Costs: While the team knew they had to go mobile, the business model could not afford a long, complicated development process. Rev1 Power Services provides engineers for the final work of testing and integrating subsystems in power plants before the plants are started up. Total construction costs for the plants typically run between $75 million and $600 million. Rev1 built a Microsoft Access database for coordinating its work on each plant. But over time, Rev1 found that Microsoft Access was no longer capable of delivering what the company needed and it was not robust enough. Rev1 also wanted to migrate to a more open platform that wasn't confined to the desktop, and that was mobile and Web-friendly.

Solution
Andrew Rachel, Database Manager for Rev1, researched solutions, and found that Alpha Anywhere ideally matched the company's needs because of its flexibility, power, and ability to build both Web-based applications and mobile apps. "Alpha gave us everything we needed," he says. "A big selling point was its offline capabilities. Workers at the plants we work on can be out of reach of the Internet, so Alpha's ability to build mobile apps that work when offline was a tremendous draw." Rev1 built a system with Alpha Anywhere that tracks all the hardware its staff works on, including controllers, motors, switch gears, and miles of piping and power cables. The Alpha Anywhere system also tracks all results of testing performed to get the plant running. The system is tied to a MySQL database and will ultimately link to Primavera project-management systems used at the projects by many construction firms. "Our system used to be desktop only," Rachel says. Alpha Anywhere has improved the productivity and efficiency of Rev1 staff, and helped the company dramatically reduce the time required to do its work. Previously, Rev1 staff had to travel to each site and spend a week setting up Access and local servers. The Alpha Anywhere system can be set up at remote sites in hours because no local servers are required. Each new project is easier to start than in the past, because pre-formatted templates are already built, which can be easily customized for each plant. Previously, some of the work was not automated. Staff in the field wrote notes by hand, and that information then had to be entered into the database. In addition to causing more work, this old process could cause errors because handwriting can be difficult to decipher. With the Alpha Anywhere system, that work is eliminated. Staff instead inputs the information directly into the database. A mobile app will be rolled out this summer, and will allow technicians to do their work in the field with tablets, even when out of the reach of the Internet. Typically on construction sites, the trailers that serve as the main offices have Internet access, but 50 feet away, there is no access. With the system's offline capability, technicians will still be able to use the system away from the trailer, and sync to the database in the construction trailer before they leave the site for the day. "The Alpha Anywhere system has increased our productivity many times over," Rachel says. "Instead of taking us four months to do work on a project, we can now do it in about a week." He says that Rev1 has been able to do its IT and development work with much less staff. "Alpha Anywhere handles all the heavy lifting, so I don't need an IT team of 15 people — we can do the same work with a staff of four, and our software is much more robust than if I were using a different system and had additional people," he says. He adds that with Alpha Anywhere, he can build a system in three months that otherwise would have taken more than a year — and the Alpha Anywhere system has many more features. Looking towards the future, he says, "We're looking at expanding our business, and the Alpha Anywhere system helped us build will let us do that far more easily."

The Company needed an app for its sales people to place orders and take inventory out in the field at a customer’s store. The sales team uses a program offered by another company. Any slight change requested to improve the app for the Service Tool Company sales team would require a lot of time and money to have the other company enhance and update the app.  By writing and managing its own app, Service Tool Company believed it could gain more control over the development process and improve its sales processes and performance on an ongoing basis.
The most critical requirement was that the new sales app had work while offline. The  sales people do work in many remote places across the U.S., many without cell service or WiFi. The app must work without a signal in these remote locations.

Solution
Systems analyst Rusty Bourque and his team of two developers decided to use Alpha Anywhere to develop the app. The main app in development will serve salesmen all over the country.  The app, which works offline, allows sales people to take orders, inventory existing tools in the store, record additional information about a customer, and display maps of their current customers.
The app is currently in beta with a local salesman and is working well. Once the beta is complete, the Phase 1 app will go into full production for the 120 sales people across the country. It will replace the current ordering app and include the same features with high performance and speed.  Phase 2 will add custom features specific to Service Tool Company business processes to increase sales and increase profits.

After successful rollout of the field sales app, Bourque plans to develop additional mobile apps that will improve processes and efficiencies at the Company's warehouse.  For example, the worker in the warehouse that pulls an order will use an Alpha Anywhere mobile app instead of a paper form and possibly scan the UPC of every item picked, in order to reduce errors.

Warren County is located in the Adirondack Mountain region of upstate New York. It has a population of more than 63,000 people. The county is part of the Glens Falls Metropolitan Area, the only urban area of New York State to gain population in the 1990's.

Business Challenge
Warren County was using approximately 80 web-based apps to perform a variety of tasks for more than 20 county departments including building permits and renewals, certificates of occupancy, real-estate tax collection, repossessing property, and others. Some applications are used by county residents to do business with the county, and others are used by county employees for running the county itself. "Many of those 80 apps are absolutely vital to running the business of the county," says Jeremy Scrime, Senior Programmer Analyst with the Warren County IT department. The company that built the software used to develop the original web-based apps was going out of business, so Scrime needed to find new tools for building and maintaining the apps. He was looking for a platform with a low-code approach to building apps, and that would work with web standards, including HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.

Solution
Scrime spent three months researching solutions that would meet the complex needs of Warren County. He did trials of many of them, and recognized that Alpha Anywhere would be ideal for his needs. "We wanted a solution that used web standards and not require us to reinvent the wheel. Alpha Anywhere is great that way," he says. "Its low-code approach was extremely important as well. We have a small IT staff here, and Alpha Anywhere gives us more bang for the buck because it lets a small staff build web apps quickly. I was also impressed by the support, customer service, and large user community that has developed around Alpha. Also important is that it lets you easily create mobile apps, which we have plans to do. The price was right for us as well." A staff member from Alpha Software trained Scrime and other IT employees. Scrime says, "That really gave us a jump start, and made sure that we were heading down the right path." Scrime used Alpha Anywhere to build a new web app that would be the central component of a new system — a core application that county employees can log into to see their messages, phone lists, and important work they need to do each day. The app also has links to all of the other apps to which each employee has access. This was especially important because not all employees have access to all apps. So with the core app, each county employee gets a customized dashboard of the county's resources they can use. "Doing that really simplified life for our users as well as for the IT department," Scrime says. "When a new user comes on board, they have everything they need in their dashboard, including all of the apps they have access to. That saves time for the IT department, as well as for users." Scrime has been rewriting all of the other existing county apps in Alpha Anywhere, as well as building new ones. He plans on creating a mobile app for both Android and iOS users that will allow citizens to check the status of their real-estate taxes. He's also working on using mobile-optimized forms capability in Alpha Anywhere to build an app for the county workforce that will simplify and speed tasks such as gathering information about doing home inspections and checking for building-code violations. "For that app, Alpha Anywhere's ability to work when offline will be a tremendous benefit, because we're a rural county, so there are some areas that don't have data connections," he says.
"We've been able to build many apps very quickly with a very small staff — something we wouldn't have been able to do with another development platform. We also didn't have to do any outsourcing."

Warren County has reaped significant benefits from the use of Alpha Anywhere, including reduced costs, increased productivity, and offering improved services to its citizens.  "We've been able to build many apps very quickly with a very small staff — something we wouldn't have been able to do with another development platform," Scrime says. "We also didn't have to do any outsourcing." Scrime says that Alpha Anywhere's ability to easily connect to multiple data sources has been a big benefit. The apps he's building largely tap into a SQL database, but also connect to a wide variety of other databases. "Connecting to data sources is extremely simple with Alpha Anywhere," he says. "It's built right into the tool, so it takes very little work to do it." The core app and other web apps have improved the productivity of county workers and the IT department. And the apps, including the upcoming mobile apps, have delivered county services more effectively to the county's citizens. "Alpha Anywhere has been a win all around," Scrime concludes. "We've saved time and money and helped make government work far more effectively, which is exactly what we set out to do."

Worldpay was looking for an application development solution that would allow it and its customers to speed the creation of, payment-enabled mobile business apps. In particular, it wanted to help one of its clients, Cloudworks Global, more easily build a mobile app including payment and group communications. Cloudworks Global was building a universal platform to enable education institutions and non-profits to more easily manage payments, connect and organize members, and communicate valuable information via mobile devices. Its first application, athleticloud, is a mobile information hub for high school athletic directors, coaches, athletes and parents.
"One of Alpha's key features was its ability to work offline. That was important to us because it would give our customers something unique, and would give us a competitive advantage in attracting new clients."
Solution
Worldpay considered several solutions, and quickly realized that Alpha Anywhere was the best choice due to both its complete end-to-end development and deployment environment, and because of its ability to create mobile apps that work even when not connected to the Internet. "One of Alpha's key features was its ability to work offline," says Bryan Derbyshire, Director of Sales, National Business Unit at Worldpay. "That was important to us because it would give our customers something unique, and would give us a competitive advantage in attracting new clients." Worldpay Vice President Hunter Menton adds, "We had a specific development need that wasn't being met — a single platform that allowed our customers to quickly build mobile apps. That's exactly what we found in Alpha." Alpha developed an API to integrate Worldpay's payment platform with Alpha Anywhere, allowing apps developed with Alpha Anywhere to directly link into Worldpay's payment services. "We were blown away by the level of integration Alpha was able to bring to the API," Menton remembers. "Alpha saw the importance of integration, and brought it to an extremely detailed level. Teaming with Alpha enabled the development of a new way to integrate payment into mobile apps."
Worldpay customer Cloudworks Global was in the midst of trying build a mobile app to allow high school coaches, parents, and players to communicate via a single, integrated mobile information hub. Cloudworks Global had been working for 18 months with several developers to create it. The developers had not been able to build a mobile application that suited all of its needs.
"We had outsourced development, and it was quite complex, far more complex than it first seems," says Andrew Oldfield, CEO of Cloudworks Global. "The developers we were working with didn't have the expertise that we needed. After ten months of development, we were still only 75 percent of the way to where we needed to be." Not only was the development work taking far more time than Cloudworks Global expected, but it was more expensive as well. All that changed when Worldpay recommended that Cloudworks Global utilize Alpha Anywhere and leverage the Worldpay/Alpha Anywhere API. "With Alpha, we were able to build, test, and deploy the app in only two months using two developers, while previously six developers had worked for ten months and hadn't finished the job. We delivered the app in less time, with less staff, and for significantly less cost," Oldfield says.
"We were blown away by the level of integration Alpha was able to bring to the API. Alpha saw the importance of integration, and brought it to an extremely detailed level. Teaming with Alpha enabled the development of a new way to integrate payment into mobile apps."
Results/Benefits
Alpha Anywhere's benefits went well beyond speedier development and significantly reduced costs. The software's capabilities also allowed Cloudworks Global to build a more fully featured offering than it had originally planned. Alpha Anywhere helped Cloudworks Global build an app that works even when not connected to the Internet, which was not in the app's original specs, but which is proving to be extremely valuable. "When you're out on a football field somewhere, you may be away from a cell phone signal or the Internet," Oldfield explains. "We were able to build an app that still works when offline, doing things such as taking attendance at games and practices, and later when connected, updating the database. That's quite important for a school athletic app." With Alpha Anywhere, Cloudworks Global is also expanding its business focus. Rather than build a platform solely for school athletics, it is planning to build a complete solution for anyone in a school system and beyond to manage resources, scheduling, and payments. "Alpha Anywhere has not just saved us cost and time, but also allows us to target a bigger business opportunity than previously intended," Oldfield says. Alpha Anywhere opens bigger business opportunities for Worldpay as well. Forrester Research projects that mobile payments in the United States will grow to $142 billion over the next five years.1 With Alpha Anywhere and the Alpha/Worldpay API, Worldpay will be able to tap into that growing market and allow its customers to easily add in-app payment processing to complex mobile and Web applications. "Cloudworks Global was the first of our customers to take advantage of the Alpha platform and API," says Derbyshire. "We expect many other customers to use it as well to tap into mobile payments. We'll be rolling it out to them in the next year." Menton adds that Alpha has been an excellent solution for developing a mobile payment platform. "Alpha provides an API and an easy way to integrate mobile payments into our customers' apps. Alpha makes the front-end work easy and flexible, and Worldpay is the global payment provider that backs the infrastructure. It's an ideal relationship," he concludes.

With its head office in Lebanon, Zerock Construction is a group of construction firms operating throughout Africa and the Middle East. Its clients include governmental and private customers in Nigeria, Mozambique, Congo, and Lebanon. DesignPMS was founded by Bachir Georges Yazbek to offer complete web solutions for the management of projects that operate on a global scale in the construction and facility management industries.

Business Challenge
Bachir had previously developed a project management and procurement control system for Saipem Company using Microsoft Access. The system was unable to provide the new capabilities the company needed to support the range and size of its evolving projects. Sapiem was moving to Zerock, a multi-site, multi-country company, and needed to centralize its data and reporting system while allowing for access to the system anywhere in the world via the Web and mobile devices. Microsoft Access could not build applications for Web and mobile access.

Solution
After evaluating other vendors, Bachir chose Alpha Anywhere as the technology best-suited to his needs. "Alpha provides us the flexibility and features we needed, without tying us to an individual vendor. It is ideal for building Web portals and mobile apps," he says. Using Alpha, Bachir built an enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution called webPCM. The solution manages every aspect of construction projects in several nations, including procurement, payroll, client certification, material transit and logisitics, delivering engineering documentation, and tracking the progress of individual projects. It also helps manage more than 600 pieces of heavy equipment including cranes, excavators, and bulldozers. "We frequently need to analyze data, and using Alpha Anywhere's Xbasic function, we were able to build an elaborate dashboard for doing that," he says. "In addition, by using Alpha Anywhere to build a browser-based application, we easily and inexpensively created a powerful secure network between our company entities, something that major construction companies typically need to spend significant amounts of money to implement."

By integrating with Primavera, Zerock can better monitor the site progress of each of its construction projects. By integrating with Google Drive, it offers a way for staff in a wide geographic area to access vital information. Zerock uses Google Drive to store vast amounts of construction data, including important correspondence among clients, main contractors, and many subcontractors. Bachir estimates that approximately 500 megabytes of this type of data accumulates every day in Google Drive. That data needs to be easily accessible throughout the company. Bachir accomplished that by synchronizing Google Drive with Alpha profiles. A user can then easily find and download documents from Google, using Alpha Anywhere. Zerock has also gotten significant benefits from its mobile app. Construction projects are frequently dispersed over a large geographic area — Bachir says that in Nigeria, for example, the company's projects are typically 500 kilometers from each other. This can be problematic, because on each project, only the project manager can approve payment requests, but the manager cannot always easily be physically present at the main office. "We needed a real-time approach to having project manager approve payment requests," Bachir explains. "We can't wait until he comes back into his office from the field to approve them. So we developed a mobile app using Alpha's list control feature that allows him to securely approve payments on his iPhone." Summing up the benefits of Alpha Anywhere, Bachir says, "Alpha has saved us significant amounts of money, sped up development and allowed us to add features whenever we need them.
